ON THE EDGE OF
COMMON SENSE
by Baxter Black, DVM

RECAP 2004

What a year! Tumultuous, a kaleidoscope of mind-numbing images, an orchestra of cacophonous screeching conducted by the Mad Hatters of the media. The world flying by in front of our eyes on fast forward. "I’m late! I’m late! For a very important sound bite!"

Headline stories the half-life of a lawyer’s conscience. Wringing a rumor till its bones rattle, then sifting through the fractured pieces in hopes of finding a fact. The maniacal media made as much news as they covered! And yet, when one stepped back out of the hurricane of their bellicose broadcast, there were instances that gave one hope, that the world was not all going to H… in a hand basket.

Our soldiers on the frontline in the war on terror remind us that the same courage that established us as a nation in 1776, kept the union together in 1865 and saved the world in 1945, still exists and offers help to the oppressed all over the world.

Americans continue to climb out of the pit of fear and desperation brought on by the twin towers invasion. It is no coincidence that we have avoided another catastrophic attack. We built a homeland security system that is effective. The economy that was brought to its knees by the radical Islamists is making a steady recovery… no small miracle when so many predicted malaise. That we have reversed the effect of a tragedy so frightening speaks to our character.

In spite of high oil prices, our gasoline price remains lower than most industrial nations.

Despite the high price of beef, the percent of our income spent on food remains the world’s lowest, regardless of concerns over BSE, Salmonella, E. Coli, genetically modified foods and cloning. We have the safest, most abundant food supply on earth.

We live in a country that, if you believe the polls, the whole world hates. If so, then why do they risk their lives everyday, by the hundreds of thousands, to come here and live and become citizens? One word…freedom.

And that is what infuriates the twisted misogynous, hate-driven pied pipers posing as religious figures who threaten, condemn and boast about killing 3,000 in the inferno of 9/11.

Freedom. It is the kryptonite that defeats the despots. And that has been America’s gift to the world.
