As I start this column on the fourth of September, Labor Day, eating BBQ and spending time with family and friends, I can’t help but think of next week. Patriot Day is what we now call it, but forever it will be known as 9-11. The day that America was changed, well the day we were all changed.
If you are like me, you know exactly where you were and what you had planned for the day, before you heard the devastating news. I can remember how long the day seemed to last as I checked on the news every few minutes, trying to get more information on the flights, crash sites and wondering what could be next. How could anyone murder so many innocent people?
It seems as only yesterday in my thoughts, but for those that lost fathers, mothers, sons, daughters or others, I know that it must seem like it was much longer than five years ago.
We will never know all of the heroic efforts given by those that lived or those that died. But we can say “Thank You” to all those that helped in the rescues, clean-up and even restoration of the areas affected. I daily remember the price that has been paid for this freedom that we are privileged to enjoy, and say a prayer for those that are still there fighting for that freedom! |
The 2006 4-H C.A.D.E.T. team traveled to Niagara Falls, New York/Canada in July. Youth from Butler County were Delphine Hartin, Jacob Hartin, Nikki Cook, Rosilyn Cook, Melissa Peagler, Stephen Cook, Lillian Gardner, Betty Whittle, Renesha Gardner, Marvia Scott, Jasmine Taylor, Asia Knowles, and Andres Olliver. From Lowndes County, Cedric Washington, Heidi Rudolph, Kamelia White, Jalisa Maull, Quenisha Jackson and from Macon County, Brandon Boyd, Justin Echols, Lauren Cooper and Alycia Bryant. Tiffini Dowdell from Bullock County and, from Dallas County, Brainna Girlie, Haley Underwood, Sammy Bunch and Elijah Caver participated, while Monroe was represented by Joseph Gary, Melvain Poole and Justin Poole. The adult volunteers and 4-H staff were Callie Nelson, Dallas County; Rachel Bonner, Lowndes; Anthony Pinkston, Butler; Willie Williams, Monroe; John Pulliam, Justin Poole, Lelia Downing, Macon; Barbara Dowdell and Joy Downing from Bullock County.
