September Means Autumn is on the Way and FOOTBALL!

It’s September and we have a lot to be thankful for. We’ve nearly survived the dog days of summer, extreme dry weather, water shortages, crop failure and various other adversities. Brush fires and crop losses due to the lack of rainfall have plagued us over the summer.

Now it’s time to focus on cooler weather that is just around the corner.

The Autumnal Equinox officially occurs at 11:03 PM CDT on September 22nd, 2006 (04:03 UTC, September 23rd, 2006). This gives us an equal daylight to dark ratio; 12 hours of each.

I always celebrate these ‘Nature’s Holidays’ because they have occurred since the beginning of our solar system. These are holidays that should be recognized by all. It’s harvest time! Time to get your winter crops ready and plan for the upcoming beauty of the trees turning colors that you can only enjoy in the northern hemisphere this time of year.

Plants are telling you something right now. It’s time to harvest the seeds for next year’s trees, shrubs, vegetables and flowers.

Speaking of shrub seeds: I just harvested seeds from my Loropetalum yesterday. I placed them on my desk to dry with the intention of placing them in an old medicine bottle for later refrigeration. As I was sitting here writing this article, the seedpods started shrinking, exposing the seeds and causing an explosion! The seeds are so thick and slick, when the pod shrinks the seeds fly out of the pod with such force that it scared the heck out of me! I have never witnessed such a natural phenomena. One of the seeds hit me on my right cheek and landed on my metal desk. I didn’t know what it was until I saw the remaining pods exposing the seeds.

The Loropetalum seeds are football shaped, black in color and have a BB like effect when shot from their pods. It gives a whole new meaning to throwing seeds.

Speaking of football…I’m ready! I enjoy watching football and always wonder how they can keep their turf grass so neat and green. Perhaps we’ll ask some experts and discuss it in future articles.

Enjoy the Autumnal Equinox and get ready for fall planting!
