Too hot to hug!

Man, oh man, it’s hot. The water situation is awful. It rains somewhere in Alabama every day. It doesn’t rain in the same place twice and certainly not for very long. It’s so dry here that my Echinacea is withering, and that is a drought tolerant plant.

The other day I decided to pull some weeds. I had to water the weeds before they would turn loose from the ground. After pulling weeds, my Lisa announced she was going out of town for a few days. I said ok and gave her a goodbye hug and she said, "Whoa! You’re too hot to hug!"

I took that as a compliment and wrote a song and this article. The song will be available by Christmas, hopefully!

There are a lot of things going on around the state in August that are gardening related. Here’s the calendar of events for the Home Grown Tomatoes coverage area.

August 19th, "Tomato Sandwich Day" at the Decatur Farmers Market! The Home Grown Tomatoes Team will be there; broadcasting live from 6 till 8 a.m. and then we’ll be serving up some of the finest home grown tomato sandwiches you’ve ever eaten! Come early and spend the day with us at the Decatur Farmers Market!

August 26th, Family and Friends Festival at the Alabama Farmers Market on Finley Avenue in Birmingham. Bring your home grown tomatoes to be entered into the tomato contests (Best Tasting and Heaviest Tomato). Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Ron Sparks will be our guest chef and we’ll be grillin’ some tomatoes and rabbit! It’ll be lots of fun for all ages and it’s free! I’ll see you there!

In closing, I want you all to watch out for the ants and yellow jackets. Ants are on the move due to the extreme dry weather. Also, the yellow jackets are swarming and aggressive for the same reason. You can get chemical and bait controls for these buggers at your local Quality Co-op store.

Ya’ll come see us!

Kenn Alan presents the radio show "Home Grown Tomatoes" every Saturday morning from 6 till 8 on 101.1 FM, The Source, and offers gardening tips at HGTradio.net, where Home Grown Tomatoes can now be heard live on the Internet by following instructions on the home page!
