Catfish producers urged
to participate in survey

USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) is conducting a feasibility study on the development of insurance products for catfish aquaculture.

Mississippi State University, in partnership with RMA, is assessing catfish farming risks and examining options to reduce economic losses to catfish farmers through an insurance program. This effort may offer new opportunities for farmers to weather major losses. The study is being conducted in 27 states with the focus on catfish in Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Alabama Catfish Producers Director Mitt Walker said producers are being contacted by the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Alabama seeking information for the study. He said he encourages all producers to cooperate by providing information that will be confidential.
