Springtime... Finally!

I always celebrate the coming of spring with a day trip to the local Farmers Market and start getting that fresh produce that I’ve been craving for months.

Though I love Chinese soup, Texas-style chili and pork stew, I’m ready for some greens and tomatoes with cucumbers and fresh squash! I can only tolerate so much pak choy, bok choy, noodles and kidney beans. I’ll give the chicken producers a break for a couple of months. I want a steak and salad!

That’s right! Two pounds of aged, prime, bone-in rib eye (rare); a 16-ounce baked Idaho potato and a large bowl of salad with sliced tomatoes and imported balsamic vinegar is the least I’ll settle for right now! Can you say "Cabin Fever"? I’ve had it.

Thank goodness the weather has eased up. I am harvesting Butter Crunch and Black Seeded Simpson lettuce, baby spinach and garlic chives from the garden. The stevia is coming up and so is the dill and basil. I’ll have lettuce rolls before you know it!

Finally, most of our plants that we sustained over the winter can come out of the house. The typical last frost date for our region is April 15th. That should be an easy date to remember because it’s also… um…uh…well; I think it’s some President’s birthday because my accountant makes me write a big check to the United States government. I think it’s the Governor’s birthday, too.

I’m gambling this April. The other day I stuck out over two hundred cuttings of begonias, two hundred lemon thymes and about 80 sedums and they’re all outside in the weather. I hope the frost is over!

It’s time to fertilize your citrus plants and all of your houseplants that haven’t been fed since October.

Remember, your local Quality Co-op Garden Center’s expert can tell you which Ferti-lome® products you should be applying to your lawn and shrubbery, so stop by and see our friends.

Next month is Mother’s Day and you should already be thinking of what kind of flowers Momma likes.

Also, remember you can e-mail me with any question you may have concerning gardening, growing plants or grilling a good steak!
